Bridging the gap: Safeguarding online freedom across the Atlantic

The increasing prevalence of online communication raises the crucial question: how do we reconcile the management of online speech with the protection of freedom of expression? This issue is particularly pertinent as legal frameworks in the US and Europe diverge in their approaches. While the US prioritizes minimal government intervention under the First Amendment, granting social media platforms broad discretion in content moderation, the EU adopts stricter measures to combat hate speech and discrimination. However, with the recent implementation of regulations like the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act, Europe’s influence in shaping online norms is poised to expand.
